Trinity Cathedral Hosts “The Just Society Film Festival: Civil Discourse Through Film

In an attempt to encourage peaceful debate of current events through the lens of film, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral will launch “The Just Society Film Festival” this fall. Feature films and documentaries on a kaleidoscope of issues will be shown beginning Friday night, Sept 17, and every consecutive Friday through November 19.

The goal of the festival is to promote discussion, debate and analysis of current events through the use of popular movies and current documentaries. Topics to be examined include but are not limited to: Immigration, Human Sexuality, Poverty, Race Relations, and Human Trafficking. Each film will begin at 7 p.m. and participants are encouraged to come early for light refreshments and a brief introduction of the topic.

This event is free, but a suggested free-will offering will be gladly accepted. Proceeds from the event will benefit Trinity Cathedral Social Justice Ministries

Why: A forum for discussing today’s pressing issues through the use of popular film and polite conversation.

  • September 24th- Rabbit Proof Fence - In 1931, three aboriginal girls escape after being plucked from their homes to be trained as domestic staff and set off on a trek across the Outback
  • Oct 1- Young at Heart (documentary)-Documents the true story of the final weeks of rehearsal for the Young at Heart Chorus in Northampton, MA, whose average age is 81, and many of whom must overcome health adversities to participate.
  • Oct 8th – Born into Brothels (documentary)-Two documentary filmmakers chronicle their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta and the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city's notorious red light district.
  • Oct 15th – The Soloist- A Los Angeles journalist befriends a homeless Julliard trained musician
  • October 22nd- 9500 Liberty (documentary) - A documentary on America's explosive battle over immigration policy.
  • Oct 29- For the Bible tells me so -An exploration of the intersection between religion and homosexuality in the U.S. and how the religious right has used its interpretation of the Bible to stigmatize the gay community (documentary)
  • Nov 5th- Beauty Academy of Kabul-A documentary following American women (some of whom emigrated from Afghanistan in the early 1980s) who return to the capital city of Kabul to open an American-style school for beauticians. Some of their students are women who maintained "underground" beauty salons while the city was under strict Taliban control.
  • Nov 12th Wall-e -n the distant future, a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind
  • Nov 19th – Somewhere near Tapachula-In November 2000, Alan and Pam Skuse left their home on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, to volunteer at an orphanage for twelve months in Tapachula, in Chiapas, a coastal city at the base of an extinct volcano. (documentary)-
